Writers Digest: Why the Best Writing Is "Steeped in Knowledge".

I used to think that some stories could only be written once by one person after they had lived many years thinking about that story. I still believe that.

There does seem to be this war among writing blogs, whether one needs to have actually experienced something to write about it. I find the difference in the quality of the narrative is distinctly different when someone is writing from familiarity. Sci-fi/fantasy excluded, of course. Those authors often experience those worlds in their own minds as compellingly as we do reality.
