The Nation: This Political Theorist Predicted the Rise of Trumpism. His Name Was Hunter S. Thompson.

The ethic of retaliation is total, Thompson comes to realize. There is nothing partial about it. It ends with violence.

Through this lens ... exactly what concerns so many of us. I didn't want to talk about a conversation I'd heard before the election in the local Sam's Club (I was after inkjet cartridges), but it now seems appropriate. Mother and daughter pair in the other aisle, mother talking loudly. [Paraphrased, it's been a month or so. The main points are accurate.] "I can't wait. We'll make 'em wear blue hats. Three strikes and they're out. We'll put them all in camps. Make 'em work. If they won't, we start getting rid of them. It's about time all those aborted babies got some payback." I stood there, shocked for time, processing all that. My commonsense told me, "just another crazed rightwinger." My bigger concern was, "where in all hells is she getting this kind of drivel from?"

I just don't know where to go with all this. I really don't.  Thanks to reader Tom E.
