The first thing that must go is the belief among progressives that we are on some fateful journey to a better place.

This is an important point, IMHO. We thought nothing could be worse than Reagan. Then GWB. Nothing could be worse! Trump. I fear what comes after Trump. Truly fear.

I do try to rationalize, tell myself some people found a way to live and even thrive under dictatorships. Someone was making good money building ships for Caligula. But right now it's cold comfort.
